How long is a coastline, really?

A distant outline hides bays and small inlets. Before comparing two coastline numbers, ask how each line was drawn.

Start with what you see

A coarse line skips bends that a more detailed line follows. A shoreline also depends on the boundary being recorded, such as a chosen water level. Different definitions and resolutions can produce different lengths without either survey being a simple mistake.

What is happening?

A coastline’s representation depends on scale and resolution. A measurement also needs a definition of the shoreline and a method: changing these can change the reported length.

Look closer at the edge

Far away

Small bends blend into the outline.

Closer

More inlets become visible.

Close up

Fine details fill the view.

Invented schematic coastline with finite detail. Zoom reveals existing detail; this is not a distance measurement.

Try a concrete example

Imagine drawing a straight line across the mouth of a bay. Now replace that shortcut with several segments following its edge. The endpoints have not moved, but the measured route has changed. Neither result is useful without its method. Before comparing two coastline figures, ask whether they use the same resolution and shoreline definition. The lesson is not that measurement is pointless: it is that a number needs the conditions under which it was obtained.

AN IDEA TO TAKE WITH YOU

A coastline number needs a measurement method, not just a map.
